  • To Binyomin he gave 300 pieces of silver. (Genesis, 45:22)
Why did he give 300 pieces of silver only to Binyomin? The gemora in Gittin says that when one sells a Jew as a slave to a non-Jew, he is fined up to 100 times the Jew's value. The Torah tells us a slave is worth 30 silver pieces. Since Yosef was sold as slave to Egyptians, it would cost 3000 silver pieces to redeem him.

Since 10 brothers took part n selling him they each would have to pay 300 silver pieces. When Yosef deprived the brothers of 300 silver pieces, it was considered as if they had paid that amount. Since Binyomin didn't take part in selling Yosef, he alone received the 300 silver pieces. This showed the others that they were being deprived of the same.

  • Ten donkeys carrying the best of Egypt. (Genesis 45:23)
Rashi says they took old wine with them. The numerical value of old wine (yayin yashan) equals 430. Here, Yosef was alluding to the fact that the Egyptian exile would last 430 years.
